This week, buyers and exporters in the hazelnut market were shocked by another sharp increase in prices, following on from the last few weeks.
The main cause is the behaviour of the farmers. They keep hearing that the harvest is bad and, as a result, the prices are not fair. Thus, a general opinion has quickly formed, supported by social and local media, that one should not sell now, as prices will rise and one can get much better prices then.
We’ve been hearing that some exporters are defaulting on their contracts and have stopped shipments. Buyers are also hesitant to make long term commitments and are mostly covering their short to medium term needs.
